New PM Articles for the Week of January 31 – February 6

New project management articles published on the web during the week of January 31 –February 6, 2011.  We read all of this stuff so you don’t have to!  Recommended:

  • Samad Aidane posted a podcast of his interview with Rich Sheridan, CEO of Menlo Innovations, who talks about using Agile methods to set a sustainable pace.  He also posted interviews with Ginger Levin on Knowledge Management, and Dana Brownlee on facilitating project meetings.  All three are presenting at the Project Management Telesummit, March 8-10.  For more information, click on “PM Telesummit” at the top of this page.
  • Don Tennant did a little analysis of the “IT Skills and Certifications Pay Index” from Foote Partners for the fourth quarter of 2010, and found some interesting trends regarding project management and the PMP credential.  Of course, the report itself also has some fascinating material.
  • Villanova University offered to let Elizabeth Harrin take an online course called Maximizing IS/IT Team Effectiveness if she’d write about it.  This is her first post – the course looks very interesting.  Cost is $1,980 and it nets you 45 PDU’s toward renewing your PMP credential.
  • While you’re on Elizabeth’s blog, she also had a guest post by Rick Graham on why project managers need to know the fundamentals of contract management.  Excellent!
  • Brad Egeland writes about executive responsibilities in effective project and portfolio management.
  • Project Shrink Bas de Baar claims that a project is a tent – a temporary structure that provides focus and shelter.  It’s an interesting metaphor.
  • Neville Carson writes about change, the basic condition of life – and projects.
  • Jason Fried talks (a fifteen minute video) about why work doesn’t happen at work.  If you’ve read “Peopleware,” by DeMarco and Lister, this is going to sound very familiar.  If not, listen to Jason, and then read the book, and marvel at how long this has been going on.
  • An article by Sarah Fister Gale in PM Network addresses information security.  I was interested in the way PlayGen views retention of their programming staff as an element of information security.
  • Todd Williams writes about dealing with the sources of stress in managing projects.  Little things, like convincing authority figures to accept adjustments in schedule, methodology, etc.
  • Lynda Bourne explains what elevators can teach us about project management.  This is one of those articles you forward on to your boss.
  • Robert Kelly lists the top ten “issues” for project managers, based on his informal survey.  The short video at the end is safe for work, to the extent that rampaging monkeys and a soundtrack by Quiet Riot won’t draw attention.

Enjoy!

Coming March 8-10: The Project Management Telesummit!

If you’ve been looking at the links on my weekly summaries of project management articles posted on the web, you’ve seen Samad Aidane’s name over a dozen times.  Samad blogs at Guerilla Project Management, and publishes the podcasts of his interviews with some of the most influential educators and practitioners in the project management community.  Now, he’s called on a number of his past interview subjects to assemble an on-line conference, the Project Management Telesummit. This will be a live, online “virtual” event where you will gain valuable insights from fifteen of today’s dynamic and engaging thought leaders in Project Management from the comfort of your home, office, or anywhere in between.  The event will be held on March 8-10, 2011, and registration is now open.
